Energy Efficient and Climate-Friendly HVAC&R Technology in India

Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) are ozone depleting substances commonly used inheating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems. HCFCs are also used as foam blowing agents for insulation of buildings and also in firefighting equipment. Increase in the built environment and infrastructure development activities across all major sectors in India is leading to high demand of refrigerants in the RAC sector.
India is currently undertaking the phase-out of HCFCs through the implementation of its National HCFC Phase-out management plan (HPMP). The Stage-I of HPMP has been already implemented in the country and has successfully met all the ODS phase-out targets. Stage-I HPMP focused on phasing out HCFCs in the foam manufacturing sector, systems house and RAC servicing sector. The Stage-II of India’s HCFC Phase-out Management Plan is the next step in India’s commitment to fully phase out the harmful Ozone depleting substances by 2025.
As the HCFC phase-out of India is underway, the use of alternatives of HCFCs is increasing at a rapid rate. However, the majority of these alternatives are hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are greenhouse gases with high global warming potential. In recognition of the climate impacts of HFCs, the Kigali amendment to the Montreal Protocol was reached by the global community to phase down HFCs and replace them with zero ODP and low GWP refrigerants.According to the schedule of the Kigali Amendment, developing countries like India would begin the phase out of HFCs in 2028. The Kigali Amendment is also considered as another milestone achievement of the international community to address climate change.
In the past 5-7 years, there have been significant developments in the availability of zero ODP and low GWP technologies in various sectors. Awareness, information outreach and technology know-how are critical to increasing demand and removing market barriers to these low GWP technologies in India.
In the effort to promote zero ODP and lower GWP alternatives, UN Environment OzonActionhas successfully developed its global flagship event– Ozone2Climate (O2C) Industry Roundtable & Technology Roadshow- to create a platform to exchange information between the industry and policy makers, and also display the latest zero ODP and low GWP technologies. The UN Environment OzonAction has previously organized its O2C events in Pakistan, Maldives, China, Republic of Korea, India and Philippines in the Asia region in the last decade. To continue this flagship event that promotes pioneers of ozone and climate friendly technologies in the R&AC & Foam sector, the UN Environment and the Ozone Cell.are collaborating to organize an Ozone2Climate Industry Roundtable along the margins of the ACREX 2018.
The main objective of the roundtable is to engage stakeholders including industries in a discussion on zero-ODP, low-GWP and energy efficient alternatives in HVAC&R sector while considering the whole life cycle assessment of the climate impact of the final product.
